Gaia above Cromford, Derbyshire, 2023

Closing on the top of Black Rock, following a short but steep uphill walk from Cromford Mill. Not much difficulty getting to the top as a walker, but this outcrop has a special place in British climbing.

Not only have people been hauling themselves up the face of the rock since the 1800s, it’s home to one of England’s hardest climbing routes, Gaia.

The legendary Alex Honnold – of Free Solo fame – even headed here to free climb another Black Rocks route in 2008. Exciting for sure, but I’ll be sticking the the gravel footpaths.
