About me

Black and white portrait of William Austin-Lobley in a woodland area
Me, William Austin-Lobley

Welcome to my site. I’m William Austin-Lobley, a photographer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I spend a lot time outdoors where I capture scenes from the countryside and rural locations alongside more traditional landscapes.

I enjoy taking photographs of things that capture my eye. There’s nothing else to it. At times, it’s a more intense passion and edges towards a compulsion. At other times, it’s a peaceful and rewarding creative practice. Either way, I’m always taking photographs.

The pictures I share here and on my social media accounts are shared because something in them speaks to me. I hope you find something that speaks to you.

My photography journey

In April 2020, I started practising street photography. I was living in England at the time, and I enjoyed exploring public spaces and capturing scenes from everyday life. I regularly pounded the streets of Peterborough, Cambridge and London, hunting for scenes to capture.

On the street, I learned how to photograph, use a camera and view the world through a lens. In retrospect, I consider it my boot camp – a flurry of learning driven by a newfound love for photography and the manic drive to be among crowds following the COVID-19 lockdown.

Over the proceeding years, my tastes have changed. While I still deeply love street photography and admire many practitioners, my own photographic pursuits have diversified. As of 2023, I have been capturing images from rural locations and landscapes. This goes hand-in-hand with a rekindled love for nature, hiking and camping.

Aside from photographs?

I work in communications for the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. Previously, I worked as a writer and editor.

I love running and strength training.

I’m married to a beautiful soul.

Ongoing projects

Right now, my main project is to take more photographs.

Finished projects

Fenland: Photographs From The Marshes – These photographs explore the flat and drained marshes around my hometown of Peterborough.

My first digital zine, Under Junction 33, was completed in April 2022. You can email for a free PDF if you’re intersted. It’s a series I made over several trip to a flyover at sunrise.
